It’s been a blue-wave midterm election, which will surely dampen Republicans’ efforts to overhaul public colleges across the country. But even in the months leading up to the vote, Republicans seemed to have decided that the college culture wars had outlived their usefulness as a campaign issue.
Democrats swept seats critical to higher-ed policy this Tuesday, including in the North Carolina House, and the governorships of Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. Republican lawmakers in all of those states have made major changes to their public colleges, including banning diversity programs, establishing civics centers, and appointing conservatives to boards.
