A little more than a year ago, I wrote about how I planned to deal with artificial intelligence in my classroom. I knew that I could not police it, and that I could not effectively monitor it even if I wanted to, since the technology was moving too quickly. I was convinced, then, that within a year or so, AI would be a regular part of nearly every college course.
Still, I was hoping for one more year without AI and LLMs in my classroom and around my seminar table. I wanted my students to read books and articles themselves and I wanted them to write without ChatGPT or digital assistance. I asked my students to talk through ideas in class and in my office without a screen in front of them and I called this our “last AI-free ride.” Fortunately, I was wrong: the AI-free ride is not over.
